I am a native of Dumfries and Galloway and am continually inspired by its landscape, gardens and history. I have been drawing and painting for most of my life, first of all at my home near Closeburn, Dumfriesshire where I lived surrounded by a productive and beautiful garden, and now in Gatelawbridge, near Thornhill. Following my education at Wallace Hall Academy, Closeburn, I studied History of Fine Art with Geography at the University of Glasgow, and whilst there attended classes at the Glasgow School of Art. More recently I have studied painting and drawing at the Solway House Studio on Crichton Campus, Dumfries.
After a career in teaching, both in Glasgow and Dumfries and Galloway, I now concentrate on painting, mainly landscape. I paint local landscapes, but also those experienced on travels to France, Spain, Italy, and Australia. The main influences on my work are the Post Impressionists, but I am also interested in the techniques of Dutch Masters and their ability to recreate fabric and texture.
